About Burn to Run

Burn To Run logoWhat: A relay race of 180 miles from Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham more or less to Queen Elizabeth’s house on the Mall, London, incorporating the London Marathon.

When: Thursday April 14th to Sunday April 17th, 2011.

Route: From QEH we will follow the Worcester and Birmingham canal to the Gas Street Basin, then the Grand Union Canal to Limehouse, London. From Limehouse, we will take the Thames Path under the Greenwich foot tunnel to the start of the Virgin London Marathon where Alun Ward will be racing to the finish, expected to be not long after 1pm on Sunday April 17th.

Participants: 15 lucky runners will run solo or in pairs, a variety of distances from 6 miles to 26 miles each. We will only run during daylight hours (for reasons of safety and sanity).

Why: Burn to Run is an event designed to celebrate and to support the work of the Burns & Plastics Unit at QEH. It is the brainchild of Alun Ward and Faith Binckes. Alun is a seasoned runner who entered his first marathon (Stockholm, 2005) to raise money for the Unit, and who has secured a place in the Virgin London Marathon (VLM) for 2011. Faith is a largely unseasoned runner who is happy to make it through a 10k, but her experience as a patient of the Unit in 2003 is the reason Burn to Run is taking place. Without the expertise of this excellent team it is unlikely that she would have been running anywhere.

We hope that Burn to Run can draw upon the sense of positivity and collaboration that characterises the work of the Unit, which unites individuals from different specialisms– from both military and civilian spheres– just as burn injuries affect people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity exists to support the patients of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

We do this by providing extra equipment and facilities at the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak hospitals, and by funding research, all of which are over and above core NHS services. None of your donation is used to replace core NHS funding.

To continue with this work, we rely on the generous support of individuals such as the Burn to Run team and their sponsors.
